Differentiating Consciousness
As long as the idea of AI exists the question if it has or can have consciousness arises. If you've tried to discuss whether AI is conscious, you've probably felt the conversation going in circles. Arguments seem to slide past each other, people talk at cross purposes, and you never quite feel like you've gotten a solid grip on the question. There's a reason for this: "consciousness" isn't one thing. When people argue about AI consciousness, they're often talking about completely different phenomena without realizing it.
To make progress, we need to distinguish several different types - or perhaps better said, different aspects - of consciousness:
Attention: Simply directing focus toward something rather than processing it in the background. The difference between actively paying attention to a sound versus hearing it without noticing.
Self-knowledge: Having information about yourself stored and accessible. Knowing your own capabilities, limitations, history. A system that can report on its own training process or architectural constraints demonstrates this kind of consciousness.
Self-recognition: Recognizing yourself as a separate entity from your environment. This is what the mirror test measures - the ability demonstrated by apes, dolphins, crows, and elephants to understand that the reflection is themselves. An animal that tries to remove a mark it can only see in the mirror has grasped that "that's me."
Self-as-agent modeling: Abstractly planning with yourself as a causal element in the chain. Not just reacting instinctively, but explicitly representing: "If I do X, then Y will happen, so I should do X to achieve Z." The difference between a plant growing toward light (automatic reaction) and you planning to water the plant tomorrow because you understand yourself as an agent who can cause future states.
Phenomenal consciousness: The "something it is like" quality of experience. Not just processing pain signals but feeling pain. Not just generating text about love but experiencing love. The felt, subjective, qualitative dimension - what western philosophers call "qualia."
In the following posts, we're examining phenomenal consciousness specifically - that felt, qualitative dimension. Not because it's more important than the others, but because it's the most puzzling, and because the puzzle of why certain physical processes feel like something from the inside might reveal crucial constraints on how consciousness works at all.
